What are the application limitations of Master Guard® Wall Kote?

Wall Kote is a water-based coating system and should not be applied at temperatures below 40F, during inclement weather, when temperatures may drop below 40F within 48 hours or when the temperature is not at least 5F above the dew point. Do not apply Wall Kote to any surface that is wet, dirty or an unsound substrate. Do not apply Wall Kote at a thicker coverage rate than indicated because mud cracking or sagging may occur. Do not store the product at temperatures at or below freezing. Wall Kote will not make up for poor construction practices.

Why Is Master Guard® Wall Kote thicker than conventional coating?

Master Guard Wall Kote is a high-build elastomeric coating system designed to provide outstanding flexibility and excellent waterproofing capabilities in over 940 colors. To accomplish this, Wall Kote is applied at a rate much thicker than traditional paints. In fact, the Wall Kote membrane can be 8-10 times thicker than a traditional paint film. Despite the thickness of the product, Wall Kote can be easily applied with a brush, roller or sprayer. Wall Kote is generally applied at a rate of approximately 60-70 square feet per gallon on masonry surfaces and 80-100 square feet per gallon for wood and synthetic siding surfaces. When applying to cedar siding the area must first be power washed and the bare wood primed with Show Kote® Exterior Primer.

Here's how to use these benefits as a selling tool :

  • Purchase the Wall Kote Sample (Part #79080). This is a dry film sample of the actual product. Remove the sample from the zip lock bag and show the customer the elasticity of the product. Show how it stretches and moves, simulating how his building moves.
  • Explain how the product is applied at a thicker application rate than ordinary paint, show sample thickness. Bend and stretch the sample.
  • An example of this is when making a sales call on a condo association, get the actual siding they have and coat it with this quart sample. This will give the building manager an idea on how it will look on his project.

What colors are available in Master Guard® Wall Kote?

Wall Kote is available in 940 standard colors - The same colors available for Show Kote® interior and exterior paints. Colors can be found in the Conklin® Show Kote Custom Color Fan Deck. The fan deck (SKU 079155) is available for purchase in sales aids, by IBOs only.

What temperature ranges can I apply Conklin® Specialty Coatings, such as Wall Kote®, Show Kote® and Kolor Kote®?

The 60° F and rising guideline is ideal. The minimum application temperature on the label should be followed carefully. This typically is 50°F for latex paints. We suggest these points:

  1. Do not apply the paint if the air temperature is below the recommended minimum, or is predicted to drop below the minimum for the next 36 hours.
  2. Do not apply the paint if the surface is below the minimum recommended temperature. For example, if the temperature in the night was 35°, and the air temperature is now up to the minimum recommended temp of 50° at 9:00 am, and you are painting aluminum siding, the siding itself is probably too cold. Not following these guidelines can cut years off the life of the paint job, before cracking and loss of adhesion set in.Oil based paints are more forgiving than latex in this regard, but lower temperatures will still retard their dry, which can result in dirt collection, especially if it gets windy.
  3. Here is our summary statement on this: The extremes in temperature and sunshine should be taken into account when applying primers, paints and stains. Care must be taken that they can form a good film. This means they should not be applied at a temperature lower than the recommended minimum temperature for the product (typically, 50 degrees F.)... this includes temperature of the surface being painted; and application should not be done if the temperature is predicted to be below the recommended minimum anytime in the next 36 hours.
  4. Also, don't apply paints under conditions that will make them dry very quickly: do not paint in direct sunshine, or in warm, dry, breezy conditions.

Can Wall Kote be applied to new wood surfaces?

Yes, Wall Kote can be used on new wood surfaces. Conklin® recommends new bare wood should be allowed to naturally weather approximately 30 days before coating to reduce potential tannin staining.

All new wood must be primed with Show Kote® Exterior paint primer prior to coating. Caulk nail heads and irregularities with Kwik Kaulk.®
